My post 10 years ago, Interesting facts by Kent Hendricks

I began this blog ("web log") in 2008.  At the time, I was interested in alerting education majors to the personal value of meditating.  Not for whole days, but for 10 minutes.  As more books, videos and lessons became available, I could see less need for my writing on the subject but by then, I had developed a satisfying habit of searching what was on my own mind and writing about my current themes and ideas.

The Google service "Blogspot" allows a person with a Gmail address to have a web page devoted to a person's blog and they supply various apps.  I use a couple that give me a way to list all my individual posts and allow me to post on the side, other blogs of interest.  Probably the most active is the one called "Marginal Revolution".  It has to do with economic subjects and issues and also has an extensive comments section, very often full of ideas and rebuttals.  Here is a link to what I wrote about ten years ago to the day:

Opera

The opera I listen to the most is "The Elixir of Love" by Donizetti.  It comes on two sides and I usually grow impatient after the first one.  But I have listened to the opening tunes many times.  My copy is in English and that helps me get into the story.   The music attracts me immediately.

The Italian villagers include Nemorino, a young man of very limited means, and Adina, a beautiful young woman of some wealth.  You may not be surprised to learn that Nemorino is deeply attracted to Adina, who can hit high notes and hold them quite a while.  Nemorino asserts that he loves her and will continue to love her "until I die."

The villagers sing happily as the opera opens.  Soon, blowhard # 1 shows up, a sergeant in the army who advises all females to place their hearts in his protection.  We are no sooner finished with the impressive officer than blowhard #2 arrives: Dr. Dulcamara.  I haven't taken the effort to check the credentials of the man but he assures us that he is esteemed throughout the universe and and and "other places".  Dr. D is selling for an astonishingly low price the elixir that will work on another so that if you are the first person your beloved sees after a sip, Bingo!  Beloved will love you!

That ends Side 1 but things continue and you can find out what they are by reading the little guide book.  After difficulties, things work out.

The art of marking paper according to one's life and feelings

My wife is a member of an artist's cooperative.  I think a main feature of a "cooperative" is that it is basically owned and operated by the people in it.  But I have wondered if they are missing a major art.  They have painting and pottery and weaving but they seem to have skipped writing.

I know there are scholars and thinkers all over the subject of writing.  But it is still the case that unless you tell us what you are feeling and thinking, it is difficult to know.  So what?  It may be a service to the earth to avoid using paper, ink, electricity to write much the same thing as other people write.  Alongside ``opinion", reportage, and news, it may be that nobody is going to pay attention to what I write or to what you write.

However, there is one person that I think will benefit from writing what is on your mind.  That person is you. To write, you have to make marks on paper or some medium.  By choosing what words will convey your experiences, your feelings, your perceptions, you tend to sharpen your thinking.  Plus, you will create a record of your efforts at knowing yourself and records of what you find in the world catching your attention.

Thinking about the future

I have limited time and patience and so does everybody else.  So, I need to select what to write with limited knowledge of what will be most helpful.  It could be witty, inspiring, relaxing, handy to know.  I need to do this with limited tools and clues.

The most striking thing I have heard today is from an adventurous and intelligent young woman who said, "I want children but I don't want a husband".  We didn't have time to explore more deeply what she meant, what burdens from a husband were seen as impediments or what joys were seen as valuable were likely from being a parent.

Since I am male and she is female, since I am old and she is young, I am likely to hold to all sorts of ideas and experiences that are not to her taste and she to ideas and tastes that differ from me at her age and she from me at mine.  I think it may be helpful to think in detail about desires and associated goals.  It may be helpful to write about feelings, experiences, as well as descriptions of current pictures of the present goals and pleasure, as well as some salient pictures of the desired future.

As usual, some books come to mind (when don't they??) that may be helpful.  "Incognito" by David Eagleman and "Seven and a Half Lessons about Your Brain" by Lisa Feldman Barrett as well as readable helpful books about lessons from American adaptations of Buddhist thinking might be helpful, now and in the future.

Bathroom remodeling

We have been having our main bathroom remodeled.  Walls and their electrical and pipe contents were moved a little so the shower can be a little bigger.  The idea is to be able to have a stool or chair available as we age. Before, the washer and dryer sat in the area but we ordered a combination that was one washer/dryer unit in one stack.  It was supposed to be delivered a few days ago and is now supposed to be delivered today.  We have had poor communication with the store and its delivery personnel.  We are completely ready to be finished remodeling and installing.

Merry Christmas!

You may not be feeling merry.  You may not see any reason to be merry or to overlook the problems, the puzzles, etc. but join me in pasting a good facsimile of a merry or at least pleasant demeanor on yourself.  Tomorrow, wake up at a good time and before you get out of bed, growl!  Withhold funds from pesky charities then, but today be Merry, damnit!

Christmas eve

It seems odd to have Christmas Eve on Sunday but I guess it happens that way regularly.  It busy here and it is going to get busier.  So, Happy Christmas Eve!  I may get a similar message out tomorrow but in case I don't, have a Merry Day!  Counting your blessings may help.

Accommodating our coldest season

Well, winter has been around for hours now so we are rather used to it.  It really hasn't been bad so far.  Jane says the sunlight still doesn't last enough but she agrees to be patient.  Just so you know, I have several Janes in my life so it is probably not you that I am writing about.

We had my first Christmas party in an assisted living residence and it was both eye-opening and fun.  I see the problem with having lots of abilities and body features as we do, compared to fugus or viruses - with many features that evolution and biology have given us, we have lots of things we like and pride ourselves on that we can lose and miss. Henry David Thoreau took to the woods, except for home visits for his mom to do his laundry, seeking simplification and I find it is a helpful side to nurture but not overdue.

Today is Christmas Eve Eve so tomorrow is Christmas Eve.  That means that tomorrow night, Santa might leave me something.  There are more things I don't want, don't need, or am too short to reach but I may get enough chocolate to fill any gap.

Happy first day of winter

Did you notice the sun was up a bit longer?   One friend said it stays up 2 minutes longer but another friend said he heard it 1 minute a day.

Thursday, December 21, 2023

Yay for sunlight !

You may realize that today is the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere.  After today, the days begin to be longer.   Where I live, the internet says that the actual time of the ultimate shortening takes place at 9:27 PM Central Standard Time.  Our daylight hours will continue to creep longer until June 21.  My local astronomer, Dr. Lynn Kirby, tells me that she thinks she read the days will each get longer by two minutes and a few seconds.

Worryology

You know how it is these days: More publications and ideas, in paper and the media, or on the internet or in talking to friends and relatives come your way.  Each person  or group that creates a message tries to take an exciting angle for the headline or listing.  Plus, the world of people, volcanoes, diseases furnishes a context for danger, excitement, surprise.  Eager writers search for angles that stir, frighten, generally hook readers.  Are you in danger for that other group?  From geological forces?  From new oppressive laws?  Have you gotten your vaccinations?  Etc., etc., etc.

You have a wife, and kids, and grandkids and they can all pick up worries and fears while you are doing your share of that, too.

We are doing all sorts of things to try to stay on top of the situation.  We have factcheckers and faster verification of the contents of documents than even our recent predecessors had, but it is difficult to verify the facts and then verify the quality of the verifiers.

Choices

We have been picking movies to watch after dinner.  We stream and mostly use Netflix, Amazon, Wisconsin PBS and Acorn.  My new favorite series is "New Amsterdam", the story of an ongoing hospital and its problems and challenges on Netflix.

I have been reading "The Love of Impermanent Things" by the author of "The Barn at the End of the World", Mary Rose O'Reilley.  She is one of Lynn's favorite authors.

I have been busy this afternoon and don't have much to write.  You can go over to

Uninviting

Like most things, exercise can be overdone or underdone.  Walking the neighborhood with friends is gentle and fun and doesn't stress us overly even though I fell twice recently. I like walking and it feels helpful and healthy.  Still, today is Dec. 18 and the 21st is the beginning of winter.  We have been getting temperatures that are warmish for this time of year.  Today is a bit different.  The temperature has been colder: 20° instead of 40° but far more important for a walker is the wind.  I had just gotten to an easy shortcut when a cold, forceful burst came along. That blast convinced me to take the shortcut.  Walking starts with my back to the wind but returning puts me facing it.  It is a fairly short walk back home from there but the wind is persuasive to hustle along.  I have been meaning to get my heart beat up beyond walking speed and the stationary bike is just the thing for that.  You know, the bike inside the nice warm, no-wind house.  As I write this, I am glowing with health.

Internal timers and clocks

My timers and clocks run fast.  I know that and try to slow them down.  I also try to allow for agitation and ants in my pants.  Naturally, if an event is coming that I want and look forward to, the effect is stronger but some of that higher temperature is present with coming actions and activities that I want to get over with, too.

I basically go to bed at 10 PM and wake up at 6 AM.  As Steve Levine informed me, it says in the Bible "He brews" and so I make the coffee.  Neither of us seems to be terribly dependent on morning caffeine but it does matter.  There are a few days that I don't wake up around 6 AM and we are both of an age that one day, we might not wake up at all.  So, we are each somewhat on watch for a partner who died in sleep.  As Woody Allen said,"So far, so good".

Meditating for 5 - 15 minutes has given me more experience sensing my time estimation and internal clock setting.  It has been a very good thing to practice.

What did it?

We still have a landline.  I like its dependability.  It is always available, with its trusty answering machine.  The telephone sets and the answering machine are Panasonics, a brand I like. In order to be both reachable and able to send messages, for years, I carried what I guess was a "burner" phone, a pre-paid Tracfone.  Lynn has an iPhone, which I guess is the leading smartphone in the world.

I want to avoid being bothered by ads and other trivia and I get very few calls when I am not home.  The Trac phone never got really worked on and it didn't have all my contact numbers.  My experience has been such that I fully grasp and appreciate that a laptop computer is ever so much more powerful than a phone of any kind.  I use a HP external keyboard every day and I can move it to another computer and still have the same keys in the same place.  Since I didn't have a smartphone and didn't have any apps, I realized I should try them.

Roger Bullis told me about a sale on Motorola phones and I bought one.  I use it as my phone contact when not home. Lynn uses her iPhone.

One day, hers stopped ringing.  It was not set to do that.  She checked and there seemed to be no reason.  The ringer was not turned off.  She took it to a phone shop and they fixed it.  It works as it should now.   I asked her what they did to it and she said,"They don't know."  I think that is stunning.  Are iPhones spiritual? Are they vulnerable to demonic possession?  Are they overly complex, to the point that trained technicians perform steps in such great numbers that the actual helpful ones are buried too deep to be knowable?

Cleavage

Our dishes are 30 years old.  The noodles were served on the dinner dishes and some stuck to the  fork I served with. I gave it one tap on the dish and SPLIT!  Lynn shared half of hers with me and we found other things to eat.

This looks quite promising

I had a very good morning.  I have been trying to find how to add two apps to our new smart tv.  I am surprised by my discovery of mirroring apps and their possible use in what I have been trying.  My usual reaction to the idea of having something on my phone run simultaneously on the tv is "Boring!" But when I picture seeing our Great Courses or local tv on the new set, it is exciting, not boring.  The words "Screen Mirroring" are a pair that is being used to mark apps (applications or small programs) that can make our large screen show the pictures and make the sounds in what is running on our iPads and phones.  When I saw how many apps are offered that do that mirroring, I realized the process is a big deal.  I think I can see how to accomplish what I have been after for a week or more.

Sad case

Here's a sad case described in a poem that Lynn reminded me of today.  The poet John Roedel experienced his head and his heart and their divorce.

Too much to attend to!

I find that I have too much to pay attention to.  Christmas prep, sharing cooking, bills, reading, reading aloud, Christmas events, exercise, etc!  I try to be thorough and not omit important aspects but these days it is easy to omit important things.  Politics, innovations and modifications to procedures that I have performed before, online and off, that need to be performed in some new way that I am not used to.  Plus, smart people are intent and noticing things I pay attention to and using that moment of attention to insert an ad with a half naked girl, bright colors and an exciting new rate or reward for a limited time only! Then, after I spend a little of my precious attention and grasp what the insertion is asserting, I find it is against my convictions or diet or religion or common sense or it smells suspicious.  Completion times are extended due to covid changes, crowds where there used to be few, out-of-date web pages conspire to confuse me.

Old book guys are hard to buy for

"Grandad, what do you want to Christmas?", my oldest great grandson asks.  I know it is not fun for him to write.  He is a high school graduate and now works fulltime at loading and handling frozen foods.  "Fifty lbs. Is not what it used to be,"

"How about taking some photographs of yourself working?"

"Grandad, I want to keep my job.  We are in trouble if our phones are even in the workroom."

I try to think of something that would show me a little of his life and his world.

He breaks the silence: "I will buy you some chocolates."

Or, should I just live any old way?

My friend said," My parents' both developed brain problems as they aged.  What does that mean for me?I alternate between being a vegan marathoner and just living any old way with wine and good times."

I suspect that many people more or less automatically pick one side or the other: work to extend my life to the maximum possible length or just forget the thorny questions about maximum longevity and "live it up" until the end.  Both strategies seem to have to proceed with uncertainty.  Death can come in surprising ways and nothing is certain.  Another friend, one who owned 64 bicycles and was indeed a long distance bike rider, just died of a heart attack.  Should he have been more moderate with exercise?  Depends on what he wanted, MAYBE.

I guess it could help to accept the idea of dying instead of hating it while trying not to waste chances to live well and do good.

No, Virginia, correlation does not necessarily signify causation

On Thursdays I like posting things I want everyone to enjoy.

This one, I stole from Tamar Haspel, who writes about food for the Washington Post.

I follow her on X (the site formerly known as Twitter), where she recently posted:

This could be my all-time favorite BMI correlation!

In China and post-Soviet states, BMI correlates with corruption. The fatter, the crookeder.

The correlation she cites is from an article in the Economist, Are Overweight Politicians Less Trustworthy?

I agree.  This is a fabulous example of how correlation does NOT mean causation—a basic tenet of epidemiology often forgotten.

But here's my personal favorite example.  I laugh every time I see it.

Image

No, the Dietary Guidelines did not cause the prevalence of obesity to rise.

This is correlation, NOT causation.

For causes, please consider food overproduction, pressures on food companies to sell food when there is so much of it, and the shareholder value movement, which demands not only profits, but  continual growth in profits.  All of these forced food companies to find new ways to get everyone to eat more food (by creating an "eat more" food environment.  I discuss all this in Food Politics and my other books).

Correlation is lots of fun but causation requires much deeper analyses.

Sorry about that.

Thanks Tamar.
