In my world, there is lots of focus on what is "best". A major reason is we are often faced with a sea of choices. So, what to choose? For what? We don't know so let's just get the "best". There are often many reasons. For instance, as a somewhat crabby, "different" sort of person, with different tastes and different hopes, not the usual ones, what a nice committee of pleasant people choose as best may be noticeably inferior to an item that fits my needs closely.
A related issue is "margin". This pen was judged best but the choice was difficult to make since all the candidates for the designation "best" were quite good. If we have time and energy to think, we can see that the margin by which the "best" is best is small and easily ignored. Just put the satisfactory pens out and let me eeny, miney, moe
