My son-in-law built our house. We went through a book of house designs separately and we both picked the same model as the one we liked and wanted. He built it quickly, in about a month. We were living about 120 miles away in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. After splitting my time between Stevens Point in the central part of the state and Lacrosse in the western edge on the Mississippi river, it was clear to me that Point was more fun and a better fit for me. The usual academic structures are built to accept a young professor who will then hopefully rise through three ranks of assistant professor, associate professor and full professor, maybe taking five or ten years at each step. When Lynn got her PhD, she landed a job as an assistant professor. I joined her part time in an academic staff position at UW-L, a kind of extra-position on the side of the usual development line.
When our son-in-law, David, finished building our house back in Point, we moved in, me completely and her as a Stevens Point academic staff. It has been a good residence but Lynn thought the time will come when we want a bigger shower, when we sit on a shower stool. Today, a cousin and Dave started changing flooring and pipes to accommodate a larger shower stall. The job is supposed to take two weeks. We have more hammering and screeching drills than usual.
