The book "Incognito" is excellent at directing one's attention to parts of the brain and mind that work while deliberate thinking and reasoning go on consciously. Habits and hormones direct our attention and energies in ways that it is easy to overlook since they work quietly and without noticeable effort. But the smaller and yet more complete book, "Your Brain is Not for Thinking" was more helpful to me. Also Prof. Barrett's TED talks, especially this one You aren't at the mercy of your emotions -- your brain creates them are very helpful. And available for free. And short and complete.
