We were eating out bananas at breakfast. When she finished hers, she cavalierly tossed the peel onto MY plate, saying as she did so," Who did that?" I said that judging for the pattern of the crumpled skin that it had been tossed from the position of her chair.
She immediately said,"Abby!"
Abby? The Abby from the all-girls camp where I worked in the summer of '58? I hardly knew my wife then and I couldn't think of another Abby. See, I am probably slower than you, who may have immediately thought of Abby Sciuto, who has her own entry in the Wikipedia despite the facts that you and I don't, and we're real but she isn't. The well-known Miss Sciuto is a forensic specialist par excellence and is often able to supply key clues as to who done it.
I imagine that people all over the world know Miss Sciuto, McGee, Tony and Ziva, who work in the NCIS office. That got me to thinking of what characters live in my head.
I'm sure there are others but here are ones I thought of today:
the two main characters in hard-to-find movie In The Spirit (the uncensored version is way better)
the Russian sub 1st mate in The Russians Are Coming!
Droopy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LCsiWL6gn0
Snagglepuss - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4qFxTTi8q0
Rooster Foghorn J. Leghorn - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LCsiWL6gn0
Inspector Clouseau played by Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther series
Police Lt. Detective Columbo played by Peter Falk
All the characters in Enchanted April
All the characters in Cold Comfort Farm
The four aliens and their loopy overaged, oversexed landlady in 3rd Rock from the Sun
Sam Malone, his irritating girlfriend Diane Chambers and the others in Cheers
I could go on and I am sure you can, too.
All of the characters I have mentioned are from tv or movies but I know there are characters from fiction that live in our heads, such as Tom Sawyer, Heathcliff, Hester Prynne, and that woman I am careful to avoid: Amy Dunne from the novel "Gone Girl."
