Various products attempt to duplicate the good old rag but paper towels and even sturdier “shop towels” or ‘paper cloths’ aren’t really quite the same.
Here in snow country where we have sandy soil under 2-3 feet of snow cover,
it is inconvenient to dress in boots and switch shoes every time we do anything. So, we keep a rag handy at the door to remove snow and slush from our shoes when we come inside. With enough snow, we need sand for traction. Sand is cheap, it is all over around here and since it is darker than snow, it causes melting. Melting in the day means ice overnight but it is still a step toward clearing the way. So, we vacuum up sand brought in and catch sand in the rag, too. We have a box of rags, some of which are old dish towels from 30 years ago. Rags can be very long-lived.
So, this is the season for rags. Besides, we use rags to dust, a steady need. Beyond that, a damp rag of the appropriate material is the first line of getting various stains and powders off our dark clothing. At this time of the year, the entire car body is covered with road grime mixed with slush and road salt. One touch of any part of us against any part of either vehicle and we are marked. Rags often get us clean again. We shake our the rags and launder them. We have a big box of rags, doesn’t look like much but it is important.
Thanks, Rags!
