Jacques Barzun said long ago in "Science: The Glorious Entertainment" that inventions and discoveries come so fast now that we can't invent and adopt terminology fast enough to name all that is new. From Wired magazine to Netflix ads, I learned about streaming movies through the internet to my router to my streaming player to my tv. Most of what we watch these days is streamed, not downloaded in its entirety. We have only used the Roku player, available in stores and online. Just two days ago, I saw a
Samsung Streamer on sale in Wal-Mart. Like "flash" or "thumb" drives, the agreed-on name for a streamer isn't settled yet.
We have used Netflix and Amazon Instant Video but on the advice of a friend, have joined Acorn, the new British tv only service for $50 a year. As a friend said, British tv from PBS seems so much more intelligent than our native stuff. Acorn boasts further Foyle's War and Doc Martin episodes as well as many other shows.
