Downside of education

Just about nothing is purely great, with no downside or unwanted side effects.  Even education has effects which are not totally positive.  You go to school and learn that you will get more approval if you avoid saying "ain't" or "damn" or several other words.  Since you learned that in school, it seems important and correct.  Using the "right" constructions, giving the "right" answers gets you points and approval.  All the more difficult then to accept word choice or answers from others around you that differ from what you learned as "ok" or acceptable.

For many people, having attended school is like being a member of a given club or culture.  Certain habits and experiences have left their mark.  With concentration and a broad and forgiving mind, it is possible to set aside prejudices, maybe only temporarily, and recognize other ways and approaches as honorable, even if not what was learned as the right answer.

For anyone who has prepped for an oral exam, the poem The Examination by W.D. Snodgrass may recall feelings of perhaps being changed by the prepping, maybe in ways that are not entirely welcome.  Maybe horrible and frightening.
