Comforts of home

We took a trip through southwest Wisconsin recently.  Very pretty country, especially lovely Mineral Point.  However, as we age, we like our house more and more.  There we have the right kinds and brands of food, liquor, music.  We have the tools we want.  We have the electronics we like.  Going on a trip requires a computer, an iPod, a camera, a video camera, hearing aids, phone and Kindle.  Each of those items requires the right wires and chargers.  For most, multiply by two for the two of us.  No wonder it is easier to stay home, where we don't have to remember anything since it is all there.  Not to mention a change of clothes

We are surprised that the daily cost of living at home as measured by total expenditure divided by number of days is not that much less than on the road.  No doubt some of that effect comes from the easy shopping at home.  We usually save buying stuff for when we're home.  We do eat most meals out on the road so the more or less equal cost is all the more surprising.

We have noted that we plan a big and exciting trip, say to Hawaii.  Then, in the last days before we are scheduled to leave, our house seems so comfortable, so beautiful and so well-equipped that we are reluctant to leave for accommodations designed to try to fit all at low cost.

At home, we know our physicians, our doctors, the routes to our favorite stores and where we can walk and run.  We have our exercise rooms and the Y pool.  One reason to travel is to remind ourselves of how good home is.
