Naughty crops

Some years ago, Lynn saw fabric bags in Gardener’s Supply and bought a couple of them. Time went by and they weren’t used so she put them in last summer’s family rummage sale but nobody bought them. This season, she used them for some cherry tomato plants. They get sun, water and some fertilizer and have grown to be quite large and full.

However, now they are ripening. So, we defend them from chipmunks as well as we can. We know we can go to our local farmers’ market or our grocery stores and buy more than we need or want. But these naughty beings grab the sun and the nutrients and ripen all at once. It is nice to have fresh, delicious tomatoes but there is a limit!

I can see the need for canning and the modern possibilities of freezing. Fresh tomatoes don’t lend themselves to direct freezing very well but our ability to freeze foods like sliced bread and meat and blueberries pays. I guess genetic engineers are going to need to teach plants to stretch out their ripening process over time.
