The title of the blog post is the title of a movie and a book. The movie "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio" was being offered with ads but no charge on the Roku Channel. We use a Roku streamer which connects to our tv and gets its signal from our house wi-fi. Recently, the company added its own channel to the Netflix, Amazon, Acorn, TED, YouTube and many other channels that we get through the streamer.
I find that Roku has some good ideas and I took a look at their new channel. They stated that the movie was free but not that it would be interrupted four or five times by ads. I don't think there is a way to skip the ads unless the show is taped and replayed but muting the sound is almost as good. As we longtime ad audiences know, ads are a fine time to stand, visit the bathroom and return.
The movie "The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio" is based on the book and is a true story. The housewife in question is played by Julianne Moore and her husband by Woody Harrelson. The couple has ten children and way too little cash. Much of the money they do have goes to alcohol for the heavy drinking father. The book is written by the daughter of the couple, now an adult. The mother is a clever and energetic woman who keeps the family afloat with her efforts in various contests for prizes.
It is probably the strongest feminist statement I have ever read or watched. I wanted to mention it here before its strong effect wore off. It is also available on Amazon TV. If you want to see the strength and flexibility of a woman, watch it.
