In the north of the country, we like that spring brings warmth and that we are grateful for that. It does enliven and we are grateful. But the plants get warm too and so do the animals. The geese are flying overhead. We have already heard and seen robins. The squirrels and the deer are moving around, are energized by the better temperatures but that means they are hungry, too. We suddenly see bugs. Bugs inside the house. When we drove the other day, we noticed a strange event that hadn't happened for quite a while: a bug committed suicide by smashing into our windshield.
We haven't had any bugs for months. Flowers are nice and the right sort of birds are nice. Butterflies are nice and we respect and appreciate the bees. But many things that creepeth on the earth seem unpleasant and inhospitable. We find more spiders in the basement, more flies that have somehow gotten inside.
There are many parts of the world where insects have a steady presence.
I guess it is only human to try to control, to select those elements of the situation we like and appreciate while looking with disapproval on these plants we don't like and the animals that eat our shrubs and our food and sting or bite us and those we love. We see many statements on the value of all living things and the interconnectedness of nature. But that doesn't mean that I am going to be tolerant about my house, loved ones and body. Nature is well known to have its aggressive and murderous aspects as well as its lovely and attractive ones.
