Some people imagine that retirement will be heavenly. They seem to imagine tv with a gin and tonic, more or less all day. But think about it: that much gin will ruin your day and then your health. There is not much on tv worth watching. And, Honey, we are out of tonic!
Not only that, but today is the day we told the kids we would take them to the giant waterpark. My friend (retired) complained the other day that she just couldn't take any more fun. It's like your junior year of college: too much fun, too much relaxation, your parents kids keeping too close an eye on you. The Elderhostel group offers too many really good trips that you can't afford and don't have the energy for. You have already been to every continent. Another friend has already been to each COUNTY IN THE US, including Alaska and Hawaii. Just imagine that much fun!
Yes, there is a never-ending supply of things to exhaust your energy and your funds. Beyond that, your car keeps needing gas, you need to visit the dental hygienist, you need to get back to your tax lady.
There is a big difference between you now and you in your junior year of college: you are much, much, much older. That means naps. It means more serious attention to fatigue. Further, you have indeed been there and done much of what there offers. You can see why us elders are calmer and less fervent about fun. Roller coasters, another drink, a 16 oz. steak: no thanks, passed my fun limit for this week. Menage a trois is less attractive than menage a sudoku. Don't cry for us, Argentina: you too will find comfort in less fun and more quiet. It is nice here in the gentle breeze.
