Steps to joy

Lynn is taking a daily workshop in contemplative photography.  That is actually pictures but pictures are also made with words.  Yesterday, their workshop introduced two poems, "Mindful" by Mary Oliver and "Holy As a Day Is Spent" by Carrie Newcomer.  Either poem might bring tears to your eye as you contemplate the wonders of the world that you already know.  I recommend them both.

In addition, Lynn was to take at least 20 pictures.  They were to be of simple, everyday things, not especially selected for beauty or novelty.  Here are some that she shared with me:

I like stairs.  They give us extra space, safe height above ground and invite us to lift our whole body with just one leg.  Bill Bryson's "At Home: A Short History of Modern Life" explains how life got safer and roomier when houses had stairs.  But stairs are dramatic and sufficiently dangerous that you have to treat them with respect.
